Mount Rainier National Park

This image was taken on June 12, 1998 as I left Mount Rainier and the tragic events from the previous day behind me. As I stopped that evening to reflect on what had transpired, I felt sadness but also awareness. It was only two years prior when the tragedy on Mount Everest had taken the lives of many people, so perhaps I should have known better. With both tragedies on my mind, the reasons became clearer.
.
When in a large climbing group, I think hubris takes control and your decision making is weaker. I certainly count myself as one of the lucky ones, so I’d be naive not to learn something. There I was in a large climbing group and at the mercy of the expedition leaders. I was a mere follower. Furthermore, the conditions were perfect for an avalanche with 12″ of fresh snow the night before and temps that day reaching almost 70F. Combine that with a 30 degree slope and an avalanche is practically inevitable. Therefore, the main lesson I learned was to be in a smaller climbing party. I have to be able to make my own decisions and control my own actions, especially in dangerous situations.

Mt. Rainier

When I shot this photo on June 11, 1998, little did any of us know what tragedy lay ahead.
.
I photographed this sunrise while on a climbing trip up Mt. Rainier. After hiking for several hours in the dark, my climbing partners and I rested on the slopes of Ingraham Glacier to watch the sunrise before continuing up Disappointment Cleaver and eventually reaching the summit. We still had a very long day ahead of us, and our spirits were high. But later that afternoon, our excitement was crushed because an avalanche struck right in front of me as we began our descent down Disappointment Cleaver. We didn’t know all the details yet, but two rope teams were swept off the mountain and dangled helplessly over the cliffs edge until rescue arrived. Although we wanted to help, our position prevented us, so we left it to the professionals. Over the span of eight hours or so, we waited and watched as several helicopters and many rescue personnel worked tirelessly into the night. Eventually, we learned seven people were injured and one person died. It was a sad day on the mountain, and I’m always reminded of this tragedy whenever I look at images from this trip.
