I was fascinated with the shipping yards and cranes along the Rhine River, and this image is one of my favorites. I love the structure, form, and light, and I had hoped to capture its symmetry and allure. With this image made from a moving ship, I had only one chance to get it perfect. I did and couldn’t be happier!

This image was made just after yesterdays photo in the same lock on the Rhine River. As we traveled through the lock, I saw this group of people open umbrellas to protect themselves from the water pouring down from the lock door, and I immediately saw the composition. However, I barely had time to focus and compose before getting under an umbrella myself. This is one of those images where knowing your camera intuitively (along with a lot of practice and a little luck) allows you to get the shot.

In June, my family and I took a river boat cruise down the Rhine River from Basel, Switzerland to Amsterdam. For this trip, I chose to bring one camera (Leica M6), one lens (Summilux-M 35mm) and one film (Ilford HP5). Here is the first of many images from the trip. I hope you enjoy the journey as I share and relive the experiences.
