Behind the scenes of our “Nuptials” series of images. This collage shows our setup photographing the print and frame of my in-law’s wedding photo from 1958 as well as some printing of various images in process. Additionally, there are two images of the final prints used at our reception where you can see how we mounted and displayed them on the tables.
.
The camera used for all photographs was a Speed Graphic with a Kodak Aero Ektar 178mm lens. A custom lens adapter needed to be made in order to mount this lens on the camera, which is actually a common setup started by David Burnett, @davidburnettfoto. David is a very successful photojournalist and someone whose images I admire and respect. Anyway, this setup is sometimes referred to as the David Burnett Combo. Many photographers use this setup and tilt the lens in such a way to create an effect of miniature, as David has so effectively done throughout his career. But the lens also offers extreme shallow depth of field with an absolutely beautiful bokeh, which is why we used the lens for our project.

The final image in this series of photos, which was part of our wedding table centerpiece, was photographed on a rock in our backyard. As a symbol of our bond in marriage, we tied them together with a ribbon. But there is another meaning with the ribbon that references an event we implemented during the middle of our ceremony. Before the guests arrived, we set the stage by looping a long ribbon throughout the seating and up and down the length of each row. Then before the ceremony concluded, we asked everyone to pick up the ribbon as we strung it through our rings and handed them to the first guest near us. They were asked to slide the rings down the ribbon to the next guest, thus allowing everyone to see and touch them. This took quite some time, but my wife and I really enjoyed the experience of standing in front of the crowd and watching the event unfold. With the proverbial tables turned for a brief time, our family and friends were no longer watching us as we witnessed their reactions and soaked in our memorable day. It was a great moment of pause in what could otherwise become a blur.
.
Now I must be the luckiest man to have met and married my wife. Not only is she kind and generous and beautiful, but she’s a great photographer. So it was very fitting that we came together for this project and photographed images for our wedding. We are both quite proud of the series.

With ten tables at our wedding reception, we considered two unique and special, ours(of course) and my wife’s parents. This was because they were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. Therefore, we wanted personal images for each of these tables to set them apart from the others.
.
The photo depicted here, which was beautifully restored by my wife, is of my in-laws on their wedding day in 1958. Rather than simply printing the image for their table at our reception, we set up a scene to photograph of their wedding photo in a frame with just a hint of a rose in the background. This was then printed and displayed identically as the all the others, yet their table’s centerpiece also included a small cake in celebration of their 50th anniversary.

Previously, I commented that each image in this series was used as part of a table setting at our wedding reception, but their use didn’t stop there. At most weddings, tables are assigned numbers, and guests are given a place card indicating which table they’re to sit at. We broke from this tradition of using numbers and instead used our images to identify a particular table. Therefore, when a guest received their place card, a photographic print was on one side with the menu on the reverse. Although this concept was a bit abstract, the chatter from guests trying to understand where to sit was fun to listen to and turned into a great conversation piece for all attending.
.
This particular image presenting a vase of snowball flowers picked from our garden was photographed at our kitchen table. The window behind looks into our front courtyard where a large Ponderosa Lemon tree grows and provides shade for the bush lilies and irises that were also photographed for this series. Compositionally, this was a fun image to make while we took our time to get the placement and number of petals on the table just right.

I mentioned earlier that we chose to photograph flowers from our garden for this series. This is true with the exception of this image of a California Poppy, the state flower. Although I’ve seen them bloom in our neighborhood, they thrive in great abundance in Antelope Valley and Gorman, which is where this image was photographed.

Although we attempted to keep our wedding small and intimate, the final count included just over 100 guests sitting at ten tables for the reception. Therefore, this series of images was limited to ten photographs so that each photo was part of a table setting. Along with a beautiful flower arrangement which included fresh fruit that guests were encouraged to pick and eat, a unique and original image created and printed by us accompanied each arrangement.
.
For this particular photo, the hibiscus flowers were arranged in a water fountain that rippled in our back yard. This photo was a bit challenging from a compositional standpoint because the flowers were in a constant state of flux as the water undulated and slipped over the sides. However, we are both quite pleased with the final outcome.

Our home has a small courtyard that is the plot for a giant Ponderosa Lemon tree that shades a variety of flowers and grasses. Every spring, these white irises bloom and gently hang over the gravel and stepping stone pathway.

As I continue with this series of images, I’d like to point out that they were shot over a period of several months. This was primarily because the choice of subjects was not predefined. Furthermore, my wife and I discussed and observed how our garden changed throughout the winter season and into spring. As a particular flower bloomed, we grabbed the camera and played until we found something we liked.
.
To be more specific on the process, the setup of the view camera was a slow operation. We also didn’t have the luxury of a digital back to give us instant feedback. However, Polaroid film was still available at the time (just barely in early 2008), so this provided the necessary feedback while we composed and adjusted the camera. Once we were satisfied with the image, Fuji Provia color transparency film was loaded and several sheets were exposed.
.
This image of a rose is one among many on a large vine that climbs a garage wall in our backyard. The first bloom every year is a sight to see as the color bursts into view.

I mentioned earlier that this series of images was photographed and used as part of our wedding decor. As we became more involved with planning our wedding, many questions surfaced of what the day meant to us and how we wanted to remember it. We knew from the beginning that we wanted an outdoor ceremony and reception, but we also wanted a lot of natural elements with a personal touch and uniqueness to the design. We certainly didn’t want anything cookie-cutter or status-quo. Therefore, since we’re both photographers, it seemed natural that we somehow incorporated photography into the design.
.
With this in mind, we tossed concepts around and eventually settled on photographing flowers and plants from our garden. This added another layer of uniqueness to the images other than simply being created by us. Additionally, I owned an old large format 4×5 film camera that had been modified to accept a special lens, which is what creates the dreamy shallow depth of field. The previous two images expresses this characteristic very well, and this photo of a camellia flower displays it with a more subtle touch.

Collaborating on a photo project with someone is a wonderful experience. Although there are challenges along the way when ideas differ, the end photograph is a combination of both influences that results in a stronger image. I love that my wife has a fantastic eye for detail and brings a certain softness to an image. I’ve certainly become a better photographer because of her.
.
With respect to this image of a bush lily, which was photographed in the front courtyard of our home, my wife thought of the idea and together we shaped the composition. During the process, we adjusted the camera position and focus subtly so that the subject felt balanced between the in and out of focus elements, which was created by a specific lens. The end result is dreamlike and ethereal. I absolutely love this image!
