This image was shot in 1998 in Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. It was almost 20 years since the major eruption in 1980, and I was amazed at how dead everything still was.

Mount Rainier National Park

This image was taken on June 12, 1998 as I left Mount Rainier and the tragic events from the previous day behind me. As I stopped that evening to reflect on what had transpired, I felt sadness but also awareness. It was only two years prior when the tragedy on Mount Everest had taken the lives of many people, so perhaps I should have known better. With both tragedies on my mind, the reasons became clearer.
.
When in a large climbing group, I think hubris takes control and your decision making is weaker. I certainly count myself as one of the lucky ones, so I’d be naive not to learn something. There I was in a large climbing group and at the mercy of the expedition leaders. I was a mere follower. Furthermore, the conditions were perfect for an avalanche with 12″ of fresh snow the night before and temps that day reaching almost 70F. Combine that with a 30 degree slope and an avalanche is practically inevitable. Therefore, the main lesson I learned was to be in a smaller climbing party. I have to be able to make my own decisions and control my own actions, especially in dangerous situations.

Here’s another image on Mt. Rainier of a couple rope teams crossing Ingraham Glacier and about to begin the ascent of Disappointment Cleaver, which is the ridgeline on the far right.

Mt. Rainier

When I shot this photo on June 11, 1998, little did any of us know what tragedy lay ahead.
.
I photographed this sunrise while on a climbing trip up Mt. Rainier. After hiking for several hours in the dark, my climbing partners and I rested on the slopes of Ingraham Glacier to watch the sunrise before continuing up Disappointment Cleaver and eventually reaching the summit. We still had a very long day ahead of us, and our spirits were high. But later that afternoon, our excitement was crushed because an avalanche struck right in front of me as we began our descent down Disappointment Cleaver. We didn’t know all the details yet, but two rope teams were swept off the mountain and dangled helplessly over the cliffs edge until rescue arrived. Although we wanted to help, our position prevented us, so we left it to the professionals. Over the span of eight hours or so, we waited and watched as several helicopters and many rescue personnel worked tirelessly into the night. Eventually, we learned seven people were injured and one person died. It was a sad day on the mountain, and I’m always reminded of this tragedy whenever I look at images from this trip.

Temple Crag

Here’s another photograph from 1998 of Temple Crag in the Sierra Mountains, CA. This was shot in May of that year while on a trip to climb this peak, which has an elevation of 12,999 feet.
.
As this image shows, there was an extremely heavy snow pack that year, and as a result, the climb took a lot longer than expected. We wore crampons for the first two pitches and then navigated the remainder over mixed terrain of rock, snow, and ice. Although the route we chose was supposed to be relatively easy and take only seven hours, we finally reached the ridgeline in near dark after fourteen hours of difficult climbing. Knowing that we still had a long trek to basecamp, we nixed the summit and headed back down the mountain. Eventually, we came to the conclusion that our bodies had had enough as we stumbled our way over mixed terrain. We were trying to find a known rapel point in the dark, but with limited visibility, fading energy, and a lack of acuity, the situation was becoming dangerous. So we agreed a forced bivouac at 11,000 feet in the freezing dark without the comfort of a sleeping bag or tent was a smart move. As we huddled together to stay warm in sub-zero temperatures, we dreamed of these luxuries and much more back at basecamp. In hindsight, it was a smart decision, because we quickly found the rapel point the next morning after waking to a beautiful sunrise.

Our home has a small courtyard that is the plot for a giant Ponderosa Lemon tree that shades a variety of flowers and grasses. Every spring, these white irises bloom and gently hang over the gravel and stepping stone pathway.

As I continue with this series of images, I’d like to point out that they were shot over a period of several months. This was primarily because the choice of subjects was not predefined. Furthermore, my wife and I discussed and observed how our garden changed throughout the winter season and into spring. As a particular flower bloomed, we grabbed the camera and played until we found something we liked.
.
To be more specific on the process, the setup of the view camera was a slow operation. We also didn’t have the luxury of a digital back to give us instant feedback. However, Polaroid film was still available at the time (just barely in early 2008), so this provided the necessary feedback while we composed and adjusted the camera. Once we were satisfied with the image, Fuji Provia color transparency film was loaded and several sheets were exposed.
.
This image of a rose is one among many on a large vine that climbs a garage wall in our backyard. The first bloom every year is a sight to see as the color bursts into view.

I mentioned earlier that this series of images was photographed and used as part of our wedding decor. As we became more involved with planning our wedding, many questions surfaced of what the day meant to us and how we wanted to remember it. We knew from the beginning that we wanted an outdoor ceremony and reception, but we also wanted a lot of natural elements with a personal touch and uniqueness to the design. We certainly didn’t want anything cookie-cutter or status-quo. Therefore, since we’re both photographers, it seemed natural that we somehow incorporated photography into the design.
.
With this in mind, we tossed concepts around and eventually settled on photographing flowers and plants from our garden. This added another layer of uniqueness to the images other than simply being created by us. Additionally, I owned an old large format 4×5 film camera that had been modified to accept a special lens, which is what creates the dreamy shallow depth of field. The previous two images expresses this characteristic very well, and this photo of a camellia flower displays it with a more subtle touch.

Collaborating on a photo project with someone is a wonderful experience. Although there are challenges along the way when ideas differ, the end photograph is a combination of both influences that results in a stronger image. I love that my wife has a fantastic eye for detail and brings a certain softness to an image. I’ve certainly become a better photographer because of her.
.
With respect to this image of a bush lily, which was photographed in the front courtyard of our home, my wife thought of the idea and together we shaped the composition. During the process, we adjusted the camera position and focus subtly so that the subject felt balanced between the in and out of focus elements, which was created by a specific lens. The end result is dreamlike and ethereal. I absolutely love this image!
