On safari in Tanzania, I had just missed the great migration, but I don’t recall if I was late or early. In any case, I was able to capture this beautiful formation of wildebeest, led by a few zebra.

Photographing from above is a thrilling experience and allows an image to tell a different story. While floating in a hot air balloon, I saw these two pairs of animals and thought about their symbiotic relationship. With the giraffes good eyesight and the zebras good sense of smell and hearing, it’s understandable that they would hang out together. After all, I had just seen a lion a few minutes earlier and these four were very exposed in the endless plains of the Serengeti.

This leopard was very active and we were able to watch him for quite a long time. After frolicking in the grass, he climbed in and out of this tree several times. It was an amazing experience to witness.

By many standards, this is a simple photograph. However, as these two lions rest in the Ngorongoro Crater, I really like the balance and symmetry of their opposite directions and curled tails. When I scan the image, my eye constantly circles back to their eyes and darts between the two. Additionally, I wonder if opposing positions give them a 360 degree view of their surroundings, thus increasing their chance of finding prey.

This is another image similar in technique as my previous image. However, as that photo may feel frenetic, I find this image to be more graceful with the wildebeest seeming to float above the ground. Finally, I also see an allusion to prehistoric cave drawings.

I love capturing time in a photograph, whether it’s with a very long exposure to blur a lot of detail to nothing or with a slow shutter speed and camera movement to create an effect. While on safari with Any Biggs, @theglobalphotographer, I saw him shooting with this latter technique of dragging the shutter and ran with it myself. The results, however, can be hit or miss. But when they’re a hit, the image can draw you in and suggest more than just a photo of the subject.
