It’s been a long time since I’ve shot this much 35mm film. For a recent trip, I chose to use one camera, one lens, and one film. Although challenging, it felt liberating. I can’t wait to see the results.

What camera should I buy? What’s the best camera? What camera should I use? Is this camera better than that one? Which camera makes the best images?
.
These are all questions most, if not all, photographers ask at some point in their life. For me, I look at the camera as a tool. Just like all hammers are not the same, all cameras are different. Some are more suited for one type of photography over the other. But in the end, the image is what’s most important.
.
One of the reasons I shoot with so many cameras is because of what I just said above. The camera is a tool and there are certain images that I simply wouldn’t be able to capture if I restricted myself to only one camera. I’m not opposed to restrictions or limitations in photography. In fact, I find that this is a healthy exercise to push yourself into unknown territory. But I would never want to restrict myself to one camera or format for the rest of my life. There are simply too many images to be made that a single camera isn’t capable of capturing. An 8×10 camera is wonderful, but simply can’t capture certain images that another simpler or more nimble camera is able to. On the contrary, a view camera is capable of making images that many other cameras are unable to.
.
So what’s the best camera? Well…whatever is the right tool for the job. Maybe the real question is, “Which camera helps you capture your vision the best in the moment?”

The Buttermilks

Recently, I received the following quote in an email correspondence:
.
” Abhyasa (practice) is a dedicated, unswerving, constant, and vigilant search into a chosen subject pursued against all odds in the face of repeated failures, for indefinitely long periods of time.” – B.K.S. Iyengar
.
The sender was a stranger, and I have no idea why she included this quote. But I’ve been thinking a lot about it lately. I’m not one to give up, nor am I afraid to make mistakes. Instead, I welcome and learn from them. With regards to photography, I continue to strive for improvement, even through missteps, setbacks, and experiments, and it’s become a life pursuit with no end in sight. So it seems that I’ve been following Abhyasa. I like this.
