Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

When I shot this image ten years ago in the grasslands of the Serengeti, I didn’t particularly think of any symbolism for the moon or elephant in any way. Instead, the pairing of the subjects grabbed my attention, and I couldn’t let go. With the scene quickly unfolding before me, I instinctively composed and shot the photo before the elephant left the frame.
.
Now that some time has passed, however, I’ve wondered why this image moves me and that many people I show it to respond strongly in a positive way. Could it be the symbolism of each subject? With the moon typically representing time and the elephant representing strength, I wonder if the image reminds me of my own mortality, that time has power over all of us. Or perhaps it’s the opposite and the image is suggesting immortality, the endurance of the soul? Or maybe it’s just a photo of an elephant and moon? This discernment is why I like photography so much; the interpretation can be left to the viewer and each can draw their own meaning. So what does this image say to you?
